The black cockatoo is a beautiful, graceful bird, with an unmistakable but somewhat mournful call. They represent change and enlightenment and herald the coming of rain. They are also believed to be the guides and guardians of the spirits of loved ones on their journey to rest amongst the Ancestors.

There are five types of black cockatoos in Australia:

• Red-tailed black cockatoo: A large cockatoo with a crest that forms a helmet when raised. Adult males have bright red panels on their tails, while females have yellow spots on their head, neck, and wings. 

   

• Yellow-tailed black cockatoo: A large cockatoo with yellow cheek patches and yellow tail feathers. Females have larger yellow cheek patches and white upper bills. 

   

• Glossy black cockatoo: A smaller cockatoo with red panels on its tail feathers.Males have a brownish tinge on their head and breast, while females have irregular yellow blotches on their head and neck. 

   

• Carnaby's black cockatoo: A type of black cockatoo 

   

• Baudin's black cockatoo: A type of black cockatoo 

   

Black cockatoos are known for their black feathers and tails with red, yellow, or white markings.
